The King’s School was started through a vision God gave the church through Pastor Barney Coombs over forty years ago in the summer of 1982. It started as a collaborative effort between the West Coast Christian Fellowship, Vancouver (WCCF) and Vancouver Covenant Church. These churches desired to make Christian education accessible to families of those supporting churches. The original vision was for a school that would offer Christian education in partnership with parents and educators within the context of a church community. You can read all about this inspiring story in The King’s School - The First Ten Years by Hugh Roth.
Over time, other families with a similar worldview joined this journey. Today, the vision has grown from primarily supporting Christian families within the church community, to primarily supporting Christian families within the local community who value Christian education for their children. In doing so, the school serves a much wider network of Christian and unchurched families within the community and internationally. It also works in close partnership with Christian educators, teachers and staff from other churches who share the same vision.
The vision is to provide a safe place for children to be trained in the ways of the Lord, learning about all of life – academics, plus character, social, spiritual and physical growth – through the lens of God’s Word. It was intended to be a long-term, multi-generational, all-encompassing vision, and continues to be relevant, considering the many challenges faced by children and Christian families in our cultural context today. This vision would only culminate on the Day when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea.
It takes a village to raise a child. While parents are primarily responsible for their child, we believe the school, parent community, and church (universal) all have important roles to play in the spiritual formation of a child. When each fulfills their God-appointed role, the child benefits, and are able to grow into the person God has designed and destined them to be.
The vision statement for ‘The King’s School’ today is to help students in the midst of a confused generation, hold fast to the word of life, and shine brightly in their thoughts, relationships, and pursuits. Its mission statement is Knowing, Showing, and Enjoying God. Together, these statements and curriculum provide us with a solid educational framework — one that enables us to effectively deliver the modernized BC Ministry of Education curriculum from a Christian worldview. We want TKS to be known for being centered on core gospel truths, having staff and students alike expressing their vibrant faith in Jesus Christ within a caring school community, striving for educational excellence while leveraging outdoor educational opportunities.
